Thoughts from the General Manager

You have probably heard by now that Mo and Marty are moving to the Caribbean, Henry is taking a job with the Secret Service and Sean is moving to Montgomery to lobby for more state funded soccer fields.  Although some of this may seem attractive, absolutely none of it is true!  As well, most of what you hear from any source other than official HFC representatives must be met with suspicion.  This time of year is full of crazy rumors meant to cause confusion leading into the tryout period.

I have decided to get a jump on the rumor mill and provide some general information on the HFC structure for next year so our members have no question as to where we are headed and who is involved.  I also encourage anyone to just ask me a question should they need information.  Go straight to the source for the best information.

All of our Directors are in place moving forward and still providing support to HFC in the following capacities:

Marty Clark – General Manager and Director of Coaching Operations
Responsible for the day to day operations of HFC and specific coaching emphasis on the Division I program.

Mo Khodabandeh – Deputy General Manager and Director of Coaching Operations
Responsible for assisting in club operations and specific coaching emphasis on the Division II program.

Technical Director of Coaching – TBD
This position is currently open and the board is actively working to fill this role prior to the tryout period.
  We will update as necessary.

Henry Mpagi – Assistant Director of Coaching
Responsible for assisting all Directors, interact with all levels of our players, and provide specific coaching emphasis on the girls division I program.

Sean Cooper – YTS Technical Director
Responsible for foundational youth program – Youth Training System.

In an effort to provide additional support to our members – we will be announcing “town hall” meetings at Merrimack.  We will announce specific times that Directors and Board Members will be present at Merrimack and free to answer your specific and personal questions.  We don’t want to use this time to make broad presentations but really want to hear your concerns, appreciate your compliments, and ensure you have a full understanding of the tryout process and the club operations.

See you on the field,

General Manager and DOCO, Huntsville Futbol Club

What to expect at tryouts

Competitive tryouts are a tense time for everyone.  We understand that and want to provide some basic facts about what to expect at tryouts as well as provide some links to documents with more details.

For starters – if you are U11 and below – don’t sweat it J  you are in!  We form as many teams as we can and we group players based on like abilities and commitments.

For U12 – U18 Division I, II and Regional Premier Teams, we provide a true competitive cauldron at tryouts.  Teams don’t move forward year to year – players do.  So if you are new to the area, new to the club, or trying to move up a team – everyone is provided equal opportunity to secure a slot on these teams.  We don’t allow “teams” to join our club – all teams go through the tryout process.  For the U13 and up DII teams – these teams are still required to go through the competitive tryout and placement on teams is dependent upon space and your ability to compete at this level.

New for 2009!  HFC plans to roll out a High School Prep team structure.  For players that have the talent to play DI but at this time in their life – don’t want the commitment of time and money to play DI, we hope to provide a boys and/or girls team that will provide expert training but have a reduced commitment to the number of training sessions and a more localized game schedule.  This environment will still provide the necessary components to keep players sharp for their high schools without the burden of our typical DI team demands.  More to come on this!

Who is going to coach my team?  Coaches will be named prior to tryouts.  Many factors go into selecting the coaches for teams and this may very well be one of the hottest topics of the tryout period.  Regardless, we will publish coaches as soon as the assignments are confirmed, which will be no later than the first day of tryouts.  Of course, as new teams form during the tryout process we will add coaches as we progress through the week.

HSC PLAYERS ADVANCE TO SUBSTATE

The Lady Raiders at Randolph (Jamie Holmes, Emily Waite, Porche Waite, and Shannon Gaston) won Section 7 and subsequently defeated Westminster (7-1) while Catholic defeated defending state champs Guntersville  (2-0). Randolph’s Lady raiders will face the Lady Falcons of Catholic once matches resume.

Middle School and Club Soccer
   by Rosie McGuigan

It was great to win the Middle School Soccer Tournament with my school team, Discovery this spring.  And it was a real disappointment when my club team, HSC 95 Blue did not even make it to the finals for State Cup this past November.  But there are good things about playing for both your school and club soccer teams.

The competition is a lot tougher in club games.  You get to play teams from TN, GA, and AK and are really challenged as a team and player.  Travelling to club tournaments can be fun.  You get to stay the weekend in a hotel and eat out with your team.  You can go shopping and hang-out with your friends.

At club games only your parents usually come, but at school games you get to play in front of your classmates, the boys team and even your teachers. Even though you may be against each other during school games, you may be teammates on club.  By playing for both you really develop friendships throughout soccer.
